Cruising Around Canberra On Two Wheels

By Jemma Mrdak…

As the weather warms up, and the days get longer, you’d be silly not to head outside and soak up that sweet, sweet vitamin D. Summer is coming.

The best way to explore the Nation’s Capital, a city that prides itself on being bike friendly, is to see the sites on top of a Malvern Star Cruiser, laaaaaaid back. Release your inner hipster. With Canberra being the cycling capital of the country, it’s fair to say that the cycling culture in Canberra has a roll on, with many cafes and venues around the city being bike and cycle friendly.

There are a variety of dedicated cycle paths, off road trails and bike lanes on main roads, which means it’s easy for anyone to get anywhere in Canberra on two wheels. Cruise along the sealed roads, through the large forests, around Lake Burley Griffin or throughout the suburbs both north and south of the City Centre.

Top spots to roam on a pushie:

Lake Burley Griffin – Located a hop, skip and a jump away from QT Canberra (literally just across the road from the hotel), this is the heart of Canberra. Surrounded by bike paths, parks and National attractions – it is perfect for riding. For a quick cycle, we recommend the Bridge to Bride 5km track, which will take you in a full circle around the lake, where you will be able to see The National Library, National Carillon and a glimpse of the Australian War Memorial.

Braddon and Lonsdale Street – Take a short 10-minute ride over to the super hip suburb of Braddon, and spend some time strolling (or riding), along Lonsdale Street. Here you will find The Hamlet – Canberra’s very own street food market, various local shops and designers, as well as a variety of coffee shops, so you can find your perfect drop!

Sounds good right? Well then jump on it!
